Carrick-on-Shannon, on the
Dublin to Sligo line, retains almost all of its MGWR station buildings,
such as the former signal box, footbridge and well maintained waiting
room on the up platform. The station is one of the most tidiest and
attractive on the MGWR line. However, it hasn't always been so rosy at
Carrick-on-Shannon; in 1988 the station ceased to be a block post and
the loop and sidings were all removed leaving a very much simplified and
underused station. Nowadays, with investment on the Sligo line, a new
loop has been re-instated just beyond the station beside to the former
goods shed and the station buildings look better than ever before. These
pictures principally show one of the only loco hauled services to Sligo,
restored for an 071 Class and MK2 coaches. |
