Railway Stations C » Carrigrohane

Carrigrohane was the first proper station on the Cork & Muskerry narrow gauge line, which ran from Cork City. west and north to Donaghmore, Coachford and Blarney. Up to the 1930s the Muskerry railway, as it was usually referred to as, enjoyed a relative good profit, but once competition from Buses and the motor cars came in, the line began to decline and was closed by the GSR in 1932, the GSR having taken over the line in 1925. Carrigrohane station was located on the main Blarney road from Cork, and once had a platform and waiting room tucked into a rocky cutting beneath Carrigrohane Castle. A mound of earth marks the location of the platform, it should be noted also that the site is located on a dangerous bend on the busy Blarney Road.
