Railway Stations C » Castleisland

The short branch from Gortatlea Junction, just west of Tralee on the Kerry line, to Castleisland opened in the late 1880s. The branch lost it's passenger and goods service in 1947, but the goods traffic recommenced in 1957 and continued right up until 1977. The branch line remained derelict for just over 10 years, been lifted in 1988. Most of the trackbed remains intact due to its recent lifting, with some sections of the line having a ballast trackbed, maybe the line could re-open with a suburban service into Tralee? As for Castleisland station itself, the site is now a supermarket carpark, but the typical small Great Southern & Western brick station masters house survives adjacent to it. Outside the town I found the only public road level crossing, which still retains one of its gates with CIE red X panel attached.
