Railway Stations C » Castletown

There was never a station at Castletown on the Navan to Kingscourt branch, just a group of levelcrossings. The line to Kingscourt was built cheaply and opened in 1872, then taken over the MGWR shortly after. Passenger services on the branch ceased in 1947, just two years after CIE forming, but the line served only sparse communities with no sizable towns or villages on the route. Gypsum traffic kept the line open right up to 2000, when that traffic went over to road haulage. Today, the Kingscourt branch remains mothballed and disused, and is gradually falling into a state of disrepair. These pictures show the state of the line in the Castletown area of the branch.
