Railway Stations C » Clones

Clones was once a very important station on the GNR's Irish North West line, which extended from Dundlak on the east coast, to Bundoran on the west. Coming from the North, the line from Portadown and Armagh met with the INW line at Clones and continued south to Cavan. Today, all these lines are gone, all of them having been unfortunately closed in 1957 to passengers, and then completely in 1959. Only one of the platforms remains today at Clones station, the rest of the station buildings having been demolished in the 1960s. The concrete roundhouse, one of only two on the GNR, or even the country, remains, having been used as storage area of the now redundant factory which occupies the station site. Just east of the station, a few goods sheds remain also.
