This is the Great Southern & Western Railway station in Collooney Co.Sligo, called Collooney South. It is located on the 1895 built Claremorris to Sligo line, known as the 'Burma Road'. Passenger services on the line ceased in 1963, but it remained open for goods traffic until 1975. The GSWR station retains both its platforms, station building and water tower. A link line to that of the SLNCR Collooney station diverged just east and passed beneath the MGWR line to Sligo, while the GSWR line curved north to join the Sligo line at Colloney North Jnc. Today, the 'Burma Road' is still in situ, though derelict of course, but is now part of the Western Rail Corridor and may be reopened in the future. For the moment, the line is been cleared and preserved in preparation for this. These picture show the GSWR station before the clearance work, and thus show the station in its overgrown state. See more about the Burma Road at West=on=Track. See also Collooney MGWR station and Collooney SLNCR station. |
