Up Railway Stations G » Gort

Gort, Co.Galway, located on the Waterford Limerick & Western line from Limerick to Sligo, which opened in 1890s and was taken over by the GSWR in 1901. Passenger services on the line from Limerick via Gort through to Athenry and Claremorris ended in 1976. The line however remained in use for freight and excursion traffic up to the late 1990s. The section between Limerick to Athenry and Claremorris is now part of the Western Rail Corridor reopening project, which is due to be completed in 2009 according to Irish Rail. Gort Station is to be reopened and much of the original station buildings and platforms are to be rebuilt. Gort had remained open for cement and fertiliser traffic until the early 1990s, and a loading bay was provided for this on the former down platform. The signal cabin at Gort is due to be demolished to make way for the new up platform.
