Killeagh, Co.Cork, is the last station before Youghal on the currently disused line from Cobh Jnc. Regular passenger services to Youghal ceased in 1963, but the line remained in use for regular goods and Sunday excursions up to the late 1970s, but by the 1980s, the line only saw IRRS and GAA special trains. The last special train ran half way to Midleton in 1988 and since then the line had become heavily overgrown. Irish Rail plan to re-open the line as far as Midleton by 2009 and track clearances along the route have already commenced. Meanwhile the section from Midleton to Youghal is to be preserved for any future opening. The track from Midleton to Youghal remains mostly intact, but some sections east & west of Killeagh has been partially lifted. The station at Killeagh has one platform and single story brick station building. The signal cabin also remains although heavily overgrown, along with a loading bank and siding. |
