Railway Stations K » Killorglin

Killorgin, Co.Kerry, was one of the more important stops on the on the former Farranfore to Valentia Harbour branch, which opened in 1884, and closed completely in 1961. This branch line, which featured many tall viaducts, and tunnels, was ranked as one of the most scenic, but was unfortunately closed by CIE who failed to recognise its future tourist potential. The station at Killorglin was actually quite extensive, and boasted a wooden trainshed, two platforms, turntable, goods and engines sheds. Today, it appears that only the stone built goods shed remains, and all other buildings have been demolished. Just south of the station the line crosses a small river valley on a large girder viaduct.
