Railway Stations K » Kilmeaden

Kilmeaden, Co.Waterford, was located on the Waterford to Mallow line, first opened by the Waterford Dungarvan & Lismore Railway in 1878. The Mallow-Waterford line closed in 1967, however track lifting had yet to reach Mallow by 1970, and the section from Ballinacourty (Dungarvan) to Waterford was retained for magnesite traffic which ceased in 1982. The weed sprayer was the only train to traverse the line during the 1980s. The last train to run of the line was 141 Class loco 146, which was followed by an inspection car EM50 in May 1990. The track was then lifted in the late 1990s.

Kilmeaden Station, which had a small station building, signal cabin and up & down platforms was very much overgrown by the late 1990s. The Waterford & Suir Valley Railway have now established their base at the former station and have reopened the line from here along the River Suir to Waterford as a narrow gauge line.
