Sixmilebridge, Co.Clare,
located between
Limerick and
Ennis on the recently upgraded
Western Rail Corridor, will soon
regain its railway service when the station there reopens in late 2009.
The station at Sixmilebridge was opened first in 1859 on the Waterford
Limerick & Western Railway's route from Limerick to
Sligo, taken over by the Great Southern
& Western Railway in 1901. The station consisted of the main two storey
building and single platform with a siding and loading bank at the north
end. Following the curtailing of services to Sligo, Sixmilebridge was
closed by CIE in 1963. The new station will also consist of just a
single platform, currently under-construction. |
