Kilbarrack

Kilbarrack, located in the northern suburbs of Dublin City, was served by a station principally constructed for the new council residential areas that were becoming established in the area. Kilbarrack Station was opened in June 1969, and was of a simple construction, consisting of up & down platforms, small concrete built booking office and a Victorian footbridge which had been salvaged from a former station elsewhere. In the early 1980s, with the commencement of the DART services, the footbridge was replaced as well as the booking office, a much more attractive red bricked building taking its place. More recently the platforms have been lengthened at the southern end.
071 Class loco No.085 leads an afternoon empty ore train from the Alexandra Rd in Dublin Port to the Tara Mines near Navan through Kilbarrack Station. This view shows how close Kilbarrack and Howth Junction stations are. 2600 Class diesel railcar No.2611 is seen on the rear of a Dublin to Drogheda service which is slowing for the stop at Howth Jct. The colour light signals here have since been replaced by new LED types. An 8100 Class DART gets a caution aspect from signal HJ42 at the north end of Kilbarrack Station. The illuminated feather above the main aspects indicates that this DART will diverge for the Howth branch ahead. This is the single storey brick station building at Kilbarrack, located on the up platform. This neatly designed building dates from the late 1990s and replaced a much vandalised structure.

These USA style signals, dating from the DART scheme in 1983, have since been replaced by modern LED types. The well known 1960s built residential flats, 'Swans Nest Court', associated with the area were demolished in 2000. Viewed from the 'down' platform at Kilbarrack Station, 29000 Class railcar No.29426 heads south to Bray as it overtakes a Tara Mines ore train at Howth Jct. 071 Class loco No.076 gets a clear signal at Howth Jct and approaches Kilbarrack Station with its loaded Tara Mines to Alexandra Rd ore train. 2800 Class railcar No.2807 leads an 8-car set on an afternoon commuter service from Drogheda to Dublin, seen approaching Kilbarrack.
