Knockbue

Knockbue, Co.Cork, was small wayside station located between Dunmanway and Drimoleague on the Cork Bandon & South Coast Railway's main line from Cork to Bantry. The station at Knockbue, latterly a halt, was opened by the Illen Valley Railway in March 1878, one year after the line was built. It had just one short platform and a small corrugated iron waiting shelter. The halt, located adjacent to a level crossing on the main R586 road, was closed by the Great Southern Railway in September 1939, however it remained in situ until complete closure of the West Cork lines by CIE in March 1961. Today no trace remains, apart from the nearby gate keepers house.

This was the site of Knockbue Station, latterly a halt, looking east towards Cork. It consisted of a single platform and waiting shelter, once sited here adjacent to the N71 road. The former trackbed is in the right foreground. This was the site of the level crossing on the east side of Knockbue Station, looking towards Cork. Originally the N71 road zig-zagged across the railway on the level, but following closure of the line in March 1961 the roadway was straightened. This is the former gate keepers house at Knockbue, located adjacent to the former level crossing on the east side of the halt. The house is now walled off from the main N71 road.
Gloundha level crossing, located east of Knockbue, has had replica Cork Bandon & South Coast Railway style gates installed at the former crossing. The gate posts are original. An accurate replica of the CBSCR style crossing gate at Gloundha near Knockbue. The gate however is made of metal, the originals would have been wooden. This view is looking west towards Bantry. The level crossing gate keepers house at Gloundha, which is typical of the type found on this stretch of the CBSCR between Cork and Bantry. An original CBSCR ¼ mile post, recovered from the former trackbed near Gloundha crossing, now installed outside the former gate keepers house.
