Baldongan

Baldongan, North Co.Dublin, is located near the coastal village of Loughshinny between the towns of Rusk & Lusk and Skerries on the main Dublin to Belfast line. The Dublin & Drogheda Railway opened a station at Baldongan in 1845, one year after constructing their line between Dublin and Drogheda. In the early days of railways most stations were very primitive and Baldongan was no exception; it is probable that it only consisting of wooden platforms and adjacent hut. In 1847 the D&DR closed Baldongan and today no trace remains other than the parallel access road and gate entrance leading to the site of the former platforms.
There's little left of the former Dublin & Drogheda Railway's Baldongan Station, as 201 Class loco No.209 races past on the 13:20 'Enterprise' to Belfast. Having just rounded the long curve away from Skerries, 071 Class loco No.075 approaches Baldongan from the north with a loaded ore train from Tara Mines to Dublin. A quick turn around to the opposite side of the road overbridge sees 075 again at Baldongan, about to the descend the long downward gradient towards Rush & Lusk. With the Dublin Mountains just discernible in the background, 29000 Class railcar heads a northbound service to Drogheda past the one time Baldongan Station.
Having just past a southbound commuter working, 071 Class loco No.077 has climbed the gradient from Rush & Lusk as it passes through Baldongan with its empty ore train from Dublin to Tara Mines. An access road leading to the one time platforms at Baldongan Station is visible on the left as 29000 Class railcar No.29405 heads north from Dublin. The former gated entrance leading to Baldongan Station. The station which served a somewhat scattered population closed as early as 1845.
