Ballybeg

Ballybeg, Co.Meath, was a small station on the Great Northern Railway's Drogheda to Navan and Oldcastle branch, originally opened by the Dublin & Drogheda Jct Railway in 1853. Ballybeg was the first station west of Navan town, the branch lost its passenger service in 1958 and closed completely in 1963. Ballybeg Station is in excellent condition, it retains its wooden GNR waiting room and level crossing gates. The station building consists of a single storey brick structure, now a private residence. The station always had just one platform.
This is the attractive station at Ballybeg on the former Great Northern Railway's Drogheda to Oldcastle branch. In the foreground are the original Great Northern style wooden crossing gates. The wooden waiting room still survives on the single platform station at Ballybeg. Other examples of this structure can still be found on the present day rail network. The single storey brick station building at Ballybeg, which probably served as the station masters residence. In later years the station was largely classified as a halt. It is very unsual to encounter Great Northern style level crossing gates, manufactured at their Dundalk Works. On the present rail network a lot of the GN gates were replaced by standard CIE types.
