Ballintogher

Ballintogher Station, Co.Sligo, was located on the Sligo Leitrim & Northern Counties line which ran between Sligo and Enniskillen, opened in 1881. The SLNCR line closed in 1957 and the track was lifted sometime round 1959. Unfortunately the station at Ballintogher, which consisted of a short platform and gate keepers house has been demolished, with a new house occupying the site now, so the only pictures taken here are of the trackbed just outside the village, as well as a typical SLNCR level crossing on the R290 road.
This is the former level crossing just west of Ballintogher village on the main R290 road between Collooney and Enniskillen. A typical Sligo & Leitrim Railway crossing keepers house remains in situ at this location. A closer view of the derelict SLNCR crossing keepers house, so very typical of the type seen at every level crossing on the line between Collooney and Enniskillen. The R290 road is on the left. A view looking towards Enniskillen from this former level crossing . The line passes by a forest before reaching the station site at Ballintogher, which as I mentioned in the description has been unfortunately demolished. Looking the opposite way west towards Sligo and this shot shows the raised trackbed in the field. Even an ancient looking stone wall has been built across the line since closure in 1959.
